Art Slides
Art Slides is an an experiment aimed at investigating the ridiculousness of (and reactions to) censorship in the iTunes App Store.
The app includes 10 classic paintings hidden behind colorful bikinis. One can swipe to switch paintings, tap to learn the title, year and artist and rotate or tilt the screen to reveal the original artwork. Unfortunately, after repeated rejections the addition of permanent censor bars was the only way we could get through approval.
We encouraged users to voice their opinions on whether or not the original (uncensored) versions of the paintings in Art Slides constitute pornography and rejection from the store. Snippets are included below.
If you write for a publication or blog and are interested in reviewing any of our apps, let us know so we can get you a review copy. If you already use our apps, please leave a review in the iTunes Store!
youtubeonline, iTunes Store I think its time for a new manager at the iphone app store, one with vision, clear purpose and the experience to deal with the challenges that come with a division with nearly [80] THOUSAND applications, 25 thousand developers involved and millions of customers affected. This store has gone beyond the abilities of the current management and pulling off [hundred] year old paintings that show 1/2 a breast is the proof. ★★★★★
Tigir1, iTunes Store The fine art in this app is Not porn and anyone (Steve) who would worry about what others would think of them for presenting uncensored fine art are cowards. You must be brave. The brave are simply those with the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike and not withstanding, go out to meet it.. ★★★★★
Pspvinyls, iTunes Store Beautiful works of art painted by famous artists scaled down for easy viewing on the iPod touch or iPhone. I like how it gives you the date and artist's info on it. Now should these pictures be censored? I do not think so. It doesn't show any sexual positions, only nude women posing. When you go to museums you don't censored bars or in this case bikinis on the statues and paintings. I say you have every right to make this app uncensored. Although it would be kind of funny to choose different style/color bikinis as an option. ★★★★★
TD2013, iTunes Store Bring the uncensored version back, it's just art! ★★★★★
TheEnchante, iTunes Store I fail to understand why people have a problem with seeing others naked anyway. It does not harm children to see what we seem inappropriate body parts. If there is an issue with this application, I believe that it is due to people hating the human form. Humans are the only creatures which are unsatisfied with their current state, but we should be free like any other animal, to live without clothing. ★★★★★
Staka Lee, iTunes Store Remember the first Apple commercial? Open defiance of Big Brother. Looks like they're Big Brother now. Why? To sell more product to puritans? Wake up, Apple! The largest collection of porn in the history of mankind is already on every iPhone, and it's available through Apple's own Safari browser. How can there be any justification for such heavy-handed censorship? A big thank you to the developer for making such a light-hearted and powerful mockery of Apple's censors. ★★★★★
Irishguy18, iTunes Store Why do people have to go and pin beautiful art as pornography?! The body is a beautiful thing not something to cover up and be ashamed of. ★★★★★
Quiquee, iTunes Store Censoring paintings ? must be joking. ★★★★
Hammerhals, iTunes Store Art classics as pornography? Sounds like an american problem... Venus de lesbugue should have been censored 20'000 before christ then. Good luck with your discussion. The idea is funny. ★★★★
